Beware the Valkyries

Megan

MeganWhat’s your name?
Megan, or my internet alias Kaiju Koi

Which shop do you work at?
Twilite Zone Comics in Glen Burnie, MD

What do you do for your shop?
Inventory, subscriptions, manning register, and a little bit of everything else!
Lately I’ve been trying to be more active in setting up events at local businesses and libraries.

How long have you worked there?
About 9 months.

What are some of your favorite comics?
Batman, Swamp Thing, Saga, Godzilla Half-Century War, Punk Rock Jesus, Preacher, Wormwood Gentleman Corpse, Morning Glories, and The Strange Talent of Luther Strode.
(I tried to keep it at 5, but it was difficult.)

Who are some of your favorites in the comics biz?
Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy to be sure! The Wake is pretty much my dream team.
And Geoff Johns did a wonderful job at writing Aquaman as the badass he really is.
And I feel it’s kind of obligatory to say Allen Moore.
I’m confident that Neil Gaiman will make this list as well soon as I get around to reading Sandman.

Who are some of your favorite comic book characters?
I love Alec Holland and Abigail Arcane, Mera, Red Sonja, Abe Sapien, Hedorah, and Andrea (Walking Dead).

What is your most prized comic book or collector’s item?
Currently it’s a double signed Batman. Cappulo and Snyder were both SO nice. It was also the first time I’d met any type of “celebrity”. I couldn’t stop smiling all day.

Which comics do you recommend the most often?
Saga by far. Followed by Crossed. But I’m proud to say I’ve gotten at least a couple people to give Swamp Thing a try ;)

What kind of events does your shop participate in or host?
We’re a small store and generally stick to the smaller conventions and community events. Most recently we had a “free comic book day” day type deal at a local Chik-fil-e for all the kids.

Favorite webcomics/webcomic creators?
I absolutely adore Kate Beaton and Scott Maynard.
Johnny Wander, Oglaf (nsfw!), Hark! A Vagrant, Happle Tea, and Gunshow are currently my favorites.

If you could only read one graphic novel for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
You really insist on tortuing us, don’t you?
Probably Kingdom Come. It’s short, but oh-so good.

What other things are you a fan of (TV shows, novels, movies, ect)?
I love horror/psychological movies! Especially Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.
I could go on and on, but I’ll leave it at this saying only that Cold Fish, I Saw the Devil, and Pulse are all available on Netflix.
I’ve always been a huge reader, and fell in love with Tolkien at a young age. Followed shortly after by Stephen King.
I’ve also been fascinated by sea creatures pretty much the entirety of my life. I spend a good deal of my days reading up on unusual critters and new discoveries.

Do you collect anything?
Besides comics, I don’t collect a whole lot! I’ve been trying to stay fairly minimalist.
But two things I just can’t keep my hands off of are geeky shirts and Junji Ito whatever-I-can-get-my-hands-on.

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be? What would you use it for?
Breathing underwater.
[see previous answer]
I’m scuba certified, but it would be amazing to have no time limit on a dive and no bulky equipment to worry about.

Do you believe there is other life in the universe, and if so, what do you imagine it looks like?
I find it difficult to convince myself that in the whole, expanding universe Earth is really the only planet with life. As far as appearances go, I have no idea! I feel that we’re so stuck on images relating to what we’re used to seeing we may not even be able to imagine anything outside our mental schema.

Do you go to any conventions?
I’ve been going to Otakon for 9 years now. It’s been my main haunt as far as conventions go. I’ve only been to Baltimore Comic Con once, but I definitely intend on going regularly in the future.

Are you a cosplayer? If so, what characters have you cosplayed?
Yes! I have Abby Arcane and Mera cosplays in the works. In the past I’ve done mostly anime/manga characters including Utena, Sailor Uranus, Jin Kaze, Franken Fran, Rikku from FFX, and a “closet cosplay” of Souichi from Junji Ito manga.

Outside of the day job, what other cool stuff are you working on?
I do photography as kind of a side job.
My big “project” for the past year or so has been working as a part of Slug Chicks and scanlating horror manga (mostly Junji Ito, but we’re branching out).

Tell us an uplifting story about working in your shop!
We’re super kid friendly! We always have a variety of Beanie Babies and Hot Wheels around that we give out for free, as well as boxes of $1 comics we let them take home. It’s really heartwarming to send a kid home with a new toy and a comic book to read. Encouraging reading AND getting kids into comics at a young age!

What do you love about being a Valkyrie?
It’s really great because there is such a variety as far as taste goes. I can hear people raving about comics that I may have otherwise never picked up, or participate in the excitement over a shared title. With such a large, active group there’s a lot to learn!
